Happy Birthday to us!Friday, September 15TH 2017
Can you believe it…? Today is our fourth Birthday! Back in September 2013 we decided to form our group (Shoestring Productions at the time) ahead of a concert at the Norwich Fringe Festival. Our first performance ‘The Obscure Revue’ packed out The Lounge on St. Benedict’s Street and the rest is history!
So to celebrate our Birthday we’d like to take you through our journey over the last four years and showcase all of the wonderful things you’ve helped make possible!
So let’s start at the very beginning…
Sound Ideas began life as a concert company. In the first stage of our history we presented five different concerts, all celebrating what we love most about the world of Musical Theatre – the obscure and the original.
The Obscure Revue – The Lounge
Songs in The Wrong Order – The Maddermarket Theatre
Songs in The Wrong Order Reprise – The Maddermarket Theatre
Attack of the Theatre People – The Maddermarket Theatre
NYE: A Night at the Musicals – The Maddermarket Theatre
We had the time of our life presenting our string of sold-out musical theatre concerts which were received well and this spring-boarded us in to our first full-scale show perfectly.
URINETOWN! We were delighted in April 2016 to present the regional premier of the splash-hit musical Urinetown. Our first full-scale production saw our return to The Maddermarket Theatre for a lavish and seat-wetting show!
So what is Urinetown? It’s an anti-musical, a musical that pretends to operate on the Rodgers and Hammerstein model – but every rule of the classic “book musical” (Oklahoma, Hello Dolly, Carousel, Wicked) that we all know and love is not just rejected here but actively mocked and we love a challenge!
We had a wonderful time working in the wacky world of Urinetown and we hope one day we get to return to that dystopian future!
A troupe of Norfolk’s upcoming and most talented performers present to you the fabulous musical – URINETOWN!
Urinetown is sharp, smart, funny and disturbing. A fabulous and entertaining adventure into the future. This show is an amusing and very enjoyable musical. One of the best shows I’ve seen this year!
Pete, Fabulous Norfolk
If you want to laugh, smile, hear beautiful singing, see amazing costumes, feel entertained, jump with fear and get sprayed with bodily fluids, take a seat on the front row for Urinetown The Musical!
A quirky show unlike anything I have seen before. I just wish I could have come more than once.
The inspirational Sound Ideas Company have secured the East Anglian premiere for this wonderfully dark tale with a moral.
It absolutely fizzes throughout, revelling in a postmodern setting with the exuberant company in mixed period costumes. The well-played music is eclectic (jazz and gospel among genres), songs are fiery and punchy and the whole thing is a gigantic parody of musicals, love stories, politics and theatre itself.

INTO THE WOODS! In December 2016 we returned with the Stephen Sondheim musical, Into The Woods. This time, we made our debut at Norwich Playhouse.
‘Into The Woods’ is an adult fairy tale, loaded with a compassionate humanity with profound and searching questions about the relationship between adults and children, parents and kids.
Our story begins in a clearing not far from you… a Baker and his wife dream of a child, a flash of red captivates a tall, furry stranger and a girl with golden slippers is on the run.
Each has a journey to make, a different path to take but are they certain it’s the right direction?
Into The Woods was our first taste of Sondheim, but certainly not our last. We were extremely proud to win two awards for our production and thank every member of the cast, crew and creatives as well as all those that supported us in the audience!
Into The Woods is fabulously fun, with one memorable musical number after another in quick-fire succession!
This production is wonderfully camp, with brilliant, dynamic sets and costumes that borrow from themes that range from steampunk to classic fairy story. It almost seems set in our time, but could be timeless, as all good stories are.
The direction and staging in particular were of West End standards.
The brilliant individual performances gelled together to create a totality of fun, fear, suspense, pantomime, laughter and tears!
Still trying to fathom what I witnessed last night. We ran out of superlatives for just how good this production was!
As a benchmark for amateur theatre, the bar you have set is so high its probably close to the international space station.
Sound Ideas Theatre Company give it their all in this expressive production of Into The Woods.
It’s accessible and poignant, and its willingness to take children’s stories seriously results in a heady mix of escapist fantasy, violence and brilliant wordplay.

SWEENEY TODD! The beginning of 2017 saw a welcome return to Stephen Sondheim,
this time with his dark classic – Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Sweeney Todd was also our first taste of immersive theatre thanks to the wonderful people at The Shoe Factory Social Club.
Our story takes place in 1984 – an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of town has become home to Fogg’s asylum.
An ear-piercing factory whistle signals lock-up as our audience finds themselves locked inside a room filled with flickering TVs and crackling radios – patients sit in awe of the flashing images as they prepare to tell you the story of the closest shave you’ll ever know.
Sweeney Todd was a monumental and extremely special production for Sound Ideas. The opportunity to build our own theatre was something extremely exciting and something we will truly cherish.
USHERS: The Front of House Musical! This September we made our professional debut with the side-splitting comedy USHERS!
Following a working shift in the lives of the stagiest people in the theatre – the front of house staff, portraying the hilarious, ridiculous and frequently moving stories of ice-cream and programme sellers who dare to dream…
A preview performance of a new jukebox musical is due to take place, a three-year workplace romance is on the rocks, an untrained newbie is working her first shift and the amorous manager is under pressure to cut costs. What could possibly go wrong?
USHERS: The Front of House Musical was another amazing opportunity for us and the first production of our ‘Stagey and Proud’ season.
So we’re nine shows down and we’re about to begin our two most ambitious productions yet! Thank you so much for your continued support and loyalty and we can’t wait to show you what we have in store for the future. We promse it won’t disappoint!
