Making a SPLASH!

“If we bring a little joy into your humdrum lives, it makes us feel as though our hard work ain’t been in vain for nothin’. Bless you all.”
– Lina Lamont

Hello luvvies and welcome back to the Sound Ideas backstage blog.

Following a brief hiatus where life just got a little bit too mad, we’re delighted to be returning with a glance behind the curtain at just what we get up to here at Sound Ideas. Since we last wrote we’ve produced two full scale musicals (more on those in the next few weeks) and we’re about to embark on our next – the classic story of Singin’ in the Rain’!

The original film has been loved by generations since it was released in 1952 and has seen several theatrical productions produced worldwide, last seen in Norwich in 2013. The show has not only won a prestigious Oliver award, but has also been nominated for a string of other high profile accolades, including Best Book at the 1986 Tony Awards.

Now, it wouldn’t be a Sound Ideas show without a lavish production design and Daniel Smith, who is directing and designing Singin’ in the Rain, has prepared a feast of visual renders to wet your appetite and have you reaching for that umbrella and dancing in the rain.

The show is known for it’s Hollywood glamour and our sumptuous production will ooze just that this summer at Norwich Playhouse. Set in the frame of a Monumental Pictures studio lot, expect lavish colours, exotic fabrics and show-stopping set pieces that really bring the story to life on stage.

This industrial set design will be matched with a beautifully elegant bespoke wardrobe, designed and created just for our production!

And of course the star of the show is the rain! The title number made famous by Gene Kelly is undeniably one of the most iconic pieces of cinema ever created and here at Sound Ideas we want to do it justice! As such we’ll be producing a spectacular rain effect with several thousand litres of water that will fall all over the Playhouse stage not once, but twice every show! Now that’s a lot of water – make sure to grab yourself a splash zone seat!

We hope you’ve enjoyed this peek at the behind the scenes process at Sound Ideas – have a super weekend.
