“The cardboard trees, the painted seas, the sound here…”
– Sunset Boulevard

WELL HELLO THERE! Where does the time go? It’s Friday again – Welcome back to the Sound Ideas backstage notes blog. This week we’re taking a look at the design for both our upcoming production of USHERS: The Front of House Musical and also, Little Shop of Horrors!

Here at Sound Ideas we take great pleasure in our lavish and detailed production designs that we adopt for each of our full-scale musicals. We always begin with a full set design, which in turn inspires our costume concept drawings and ultimate, final designs.

USHERS: The Front of House Musical!

It’s now less than two weeks until our upcoming production of USHERS: The Front of House Musical! As always we have a spectacular design planned for this lavish production which we’d like to give you a sneak peek at!

In the image alongside, you can see our initial sketch for our production. USHERS is set in a west end theatre which poses issues on a small stage – but we’ve encompassed our favourite aspects of traditional venues and condensed it in to a coherent design! Our main set features a gold guilted art-deco style proscenium arch and the stage floor is a lovely warm oak colour – perfect for the traditions of the West End theatre.

Of course our Ushers have to look the part too! We’ve looked at several London theatre operators and their in-house uniforms and have built on this to create something richer and more appealing in terms of costuming and texture!

Each of our Ushers don a beautiful charcoal herringbone waistcoat – highlighted with splashes of red in the aprons, ties and accessories. This will be echoed in our set-design, which includes luxurious red velvet and grey detailing in both the wooden stage floor and detailed false proscenium!

Little Shop of Horrors!

Of course Ushers isn’t our only musical of 2017. In December, we return to the Norwich Playhouse with the classic show – Little Shop of Horrors! It might be months away, but it’s never too early to get started on our design concept.

Little Shop can be designed and presented in a number of ways and in true Sound Ideas style, we’re going off-piste with this one! Without giving too much away, audience members can expect to be transported to a 1950’s sci-fi inspired corner of Brooklyn! Set a-top a bespoke revolving stage, our set transforms from the run-down streets of skid row in to the wacky world of Mushnik’s florist in one swift automated motion!

And of course the star of the show is the carnivorous plant – Audrey 2! We’re so excited to announce that we’ll be using the puppets from the recent UK Tour! Created by the amazing guys at Accord Stageworks, these magnificent puppets are truly set to dazzle on the Norwich stage this Christmas when the giant creature comes to life with a real thirst for blood.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this peek at the behind the scenes process at Sound Ideas – have a super weekend.

Album of the week!

The Addams Family: Original Cast Recording

This week we can’t get enough of one of our favourite Broadway musicals of all time – The Addams Family! The show is currently whisking it’s way around the country on a tour and it’s well worth a watch! Asides from the standard track that every one recommends, Pulled – we think there are some great group numbers on the album! Check out One Normal Night and When You’re an Addams!.

So make sure to head on over to Amazon and buy your copy of this frighteningly good musical! Of course, it’s also available to stream on Spotify!
